The Glasgow club had applied to the local authority for 18,000, while Aberdeen’s revised figure was accepted.

The Pittodrie outfit initially applied to have around 8,000 at the qualifier.

However, with social distancing rules remaining at 1m at Level 0, they submitted a new proposal which has been approved by the city council – so long as fans can provide proof of a negative lateral flow test.

The permission stands only for the European game at the moment, however Aberdeen are continuing talks about their first league game against Dundee United on 1 August.

“This is a major step in the right direction and we’re grateful to the local authority for working closely with us to get to this stage,” said Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack.

Cormack believes that the club will be able to “accommodate all who want to attend” what is being treated as a test event, with 5,665 representing 73% of their current season-ticket base.

And, given the tight timescale, the tickets will be sold on a first-come, first served basis to season-ticket holders initially rather than being balloted.

Celtic – who will have 2,000 fans at Saturday’s friendly with Preston – have asked for fans’ patience as they continue to lobby for larger crowds.

“We can assure our supporters we will be doing all we can to work closely with the relevant authorities and welcome our fans back in even greater numbers in the coming weeks,” they added.

Ticket for the Champions League qualifier will be distributed by a ballot, with details to expected on Saturday.

Clubs in Scotland will be allowed to host 2,000 fans without prior permission from Monday, but can request greater numbers from their local council on a case-by-case basis.

Hibernian are hoping to hear by Monday about their application to have for just over 9,000 fans at their tie with Santa Coloma the same day.
