Rangers and Celtic away fan lockout to end as SPFL scrap mandatory red zone

The away fan lockout at Ibrox and Celtic Park could be set to end after the requirement for match day ‘red zones’ was scrapped.

The SFA and SPFL ‘s joint response group has ruled clubs can now make their own Covid-19 risk assessments – including allowing away fans into matches.

Rangers and Celtic have been criticised for an ongoing absence of visiting supporters this season, with their own season ticket holders relocated to account for the socially distanced red zones for players and staff.

Hearts – due to visit Ibrox on Saturday, October 16 – last week lodged a formal complaint over the matter with the SPFL.

But the JRG has lifted the mandate, which could now bring a conclusion if the Glasgow giants decide to reallocate seats to away supporters.

A statement from Hampden said: “Scottish football’s Return to Playing Protocols have evolved in line with Scottish Government guidance throughout the pandemic and the emergence from it.

"On August 9 this year, the legal requirement for physical distancing and limits on gatherings were removed as the country entered Level 0, resulting in clubs being able to play in front of more fans and, subject to local authority approval, at full capacity."

“With the country’s vaccination programme now at an advanced stage, and citizens now familiar with the day-to-day baseline mitigation measures that remain in place (such as the mandatory use of face coverings in indoor public places and on public transport), the Joint Response Group believes it is now appropriate for clubs to make their own business decisions based on their own risk assessments.
